What Are the Best Seeds for Chickens

Updated: 3 days ago

As we know, raising healthy and productive chickens requires a well balanced diet. One of the best ways to ensure your chickens get all the necessary nutrients is to include seeds in their diet!

Seeds not only provide proteins, fats and vitamins but also promote foraging, which is really important for your chickens’ overall well-being.  In this blog, we’ll explore some of the top seeds to keep your flock happy, healthy and thriving!

6 Best Seeds for Chickens

  1. Sunflower seeds are a favorite among my flock and are an excellent source of protein, healthy fats and vitamin E. They contain about 20% protein making them a great treat for your flock. You can feed them as whole seeds, but be just a heads up, they are calorie-dense. Feeding these in moderation is a good idea! Sunflower seeds are great for energy as well as feather support. Hands down, my flock’s favorite snack is Happy Tract which includes sunflower seeds!

  1. Flax seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for chickens and can enhance the nutritional quality of their eggs. They also provide a good amount of fiber, which aids in digestion. Flax seeds also help give yolks a richer color. And, as we know, flax seeds promote heart health in humans as well as chickens. My favorite way to incorporate flax seeds is by feeding them Golden Graze!

  1. Pumpkin seeds are not only nutritious but also help in keeping chickens free from parasites. They contain high levels of zinc, magnesium and other essential nutrients. Some people swear by pumpkin seeds as a natural dewormer. They are rich in protein and healthy fats. They’re a flock favorite around here!

  1. Chia seeds are packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, as well as fiber. They can absorb water, helping to maintain hydration when mixed into feed. Chia seeds are high in antioxidants which help support the immune system and they also are great for their digestive health!

  1. Sesame seeds are rich in calcium and can contribute to stronger egg shells. They contain high protein levels and are a great source of energy for active birds.

  1. Millet is a small seed that is packed with nutrients and offers a good source of carbohydrates. It is easy to digest and excellent for young chickens.

While seeds are a great supplement and your chickens will likely beg for them, they should not be the main driver of your chickens’ diet. It’s very important to provide a balanced mix of grains, vegetables, fruits and commercial feed to ensure they receive all necessary nutrients. This will help so much in the health of your flock as well as the production of eggs.

Seeds should be offered as a treat rather than the main food source. A small handful per bird several times a week is typically sufficient. Overfeeding seeds, especially high-fat varieties, can lead to obesity and health issues. So, always remember to maintain a balanced diet and always provide fresh water for your flock.

Until next time,
