Chickens pecking at frozen chicken treats with Flock Fixer

Summer heat can be hard on backyard chickens! When temperatures climb, hens may pant more, eat less, drink more and slow down on egg production as their bodies work to stay cool.

Unlike people, chickens can’t sweat. They regulate body temperature by panting, which can cause them to lose important electrolytes and vitamins faster during hot weather. That’s why hydration, shade and simple cooling treats can make a big difference for your flock.

Frozen fruit and mint treats are an easy way to help hens cool down while encouraging extra water intake on hot days. Add in Flock Fixer water, and each treat gives your flock refreshing hydration plus electrolyte and vitamin support in every bite!

The Magic of Mint for Heat Stress

The star ingredient in these fruity treats is mint. Mint isn’t just garnish, it’s a powerhouse herb for heat-stressed hens. Its natural cooling properties help reduce the impact of high temperatures, while supporting healthy digestion during the stress of summer. Rich in antioxidants and key nutrients, mint is a smart addition to any frozen treat!

6 Fruits That Help Chickens Beat the Heat

Each fruit brings unique heat stress benefits to your flock. Mix and match for variety and extra nutrition!

1. Watermelon - The Ultimate Hydrator

  • Hydration — At 92% water, watermelon delivers fluids directly through food, especially helpful since heat-stressed hens often drink and eat less.

  • Electrolyte replenishment — Potassium and magnesium help replace what’s lost through heavy panting, since chickens regulate heat by panting, not sweating.

  • Cooling effect — Serving it cold or slightly frozen provides an immediate cooling effect. Many chicken keepers freeze chunks or halves for a “chicken popsicle” on hot days.

  • Encourages eating — Its sweet, appealing flavor coaxes hens back to eating when heat drives them off feed, supporting egg production and growth.

  • Antioxidants — Lycopene and vitamin C help combat the oxidative stress that heat places on the body.

2. Blueberries - The Antioxidant Powerhouse

  • Cellular protection — Loaded with anthocyanins, blueberries neutralize free radicals that spike during heat stress, protecting cell health throughout the body.

  • Immune support — Vitamins C and K help keep the immune system strong when the body is under thermal stress.

  • Hydration boost — Their high water content adds to overall fluid intake, helping hens stay hydrated through the hottest parts of the day.

  • Low-calorie treat — Hens eat less in the heat. Blueberries deliver nutrients without a heavy caloric load, making them ideal for birds that may have stopped eating feed.

 3. Strawberries - Vitamin C Champions

  • Vitamin C surge — Chickens under heat stress deplete vitamin C rapidly. Strawberries provide a natural boost right when it’s needed most.

  • Folate for egg production — Folate supports cellular repair and helps maintain laying during high-stress periods when output often dips.

  • Digestive fiber — Gentle fiber keeps the gut moving even when feed intake drops in summer heat, supporting overall digestive health.

  • Bright appeal — Their vivid color and sweet-tart flavor spark curiosity and encourage eating when it’s too hot to be hungry.

4. Raspberries - Anti-Inflammatory Allies

  • Anti-inflammatory — Ellagic acid and quercetin in raspberries help reduce systemic inflammation that heat stress triggers throughout the body.

  • Manganese boost — This mineral supports bone health and enzyme function. Both can suffer when hens are chronically heat-stressed over long stretches.

  • High fiber — Supports healthy digestion even during periods of reduced feed consumption caused by summer heat.

  • Hydration — Raspberries are over 85% water, making every peck count toward keeping hens hydrated and comfortable.

5. Peaches - Electrolyte Restorers

  • Potassium-rich — One of the best fruit sources of potassium which is the first electrolyte lost when chickens pant heavily to cool down.

  • Beta-carotene — Converted to vitamin A in the body, beta-carotene supports immune health and yolk color, both affected by heat stress.

  • Natural sugars — Provide a quick energy boost to hens whose caloric intake dips during hot stretches, helping maintain activity and laying.

  • Juicy texture — At roughly 88% water content, peaches are one of the most refreshing and hydrating treats on a sweltering day.

Important note: Only feed chickens the peach flesh. Always remove the pit first, since peach pits can be a choking hazard and contain compounds that may release toxins if crushed or eaten.

6. Mango - Tropical Immune Booster

  • Vitamin A powerhouse — Mango is one of the richest fruit sources of vitamin A, which supports respiratory health that is critical when birds are panting heavily.

  • B vitamins — B6 and folate support energy metabolism and nervous system function under heat-induced stress, keeping hens alert and active.

  • Enzyme support — Natural digestive enzymes in mango (amylase, lipase) help compensate for slower digestion that occurs in hot weather.

  • Irresistible flavor — Mango’s tropical sweetness is highly palatable, a great way to entice off-feed hens to eat during a heat wave.
