Overcoming Transportation Stress with New Baby Chicks

Updated: Mar 14

As many of you know, I have 28 chickens and counting! This was never my plan. I was a hard stop at 6 chickens but here we are. I’m even adding to our flock in again in a couple of weeks! I placed my order with Hoover’s Hatchery and am patiently awaiting their arrival.

In the past, I've ordered chicks in the mail, bought them at our local farm supply store and even hatched my own eggs. It’s no secret that baby chicks need some extra care in their first few weeks of their life. Especially if they’ve had to go through a significant amount of transportation!

Have you ever wondered how chicks can survive being shipped without food or water? It's kind of wild. Right before a chick hatches, it absorbs all the remaining nutrients within its egg. Crazy right!? These nutrients make it possible for the chick to survive 2-3 days without food or water. Most hatcheries will do overnight or 2 day shipping, so the chicks do just fine. This doesn’t mean they don’t get stressed out though! It’s important to have your brooder temp set, fresh food and water, and a secure environment for them when they arrive. You can read all about setting up your brooder HERE, or watch my short video below.

Strong Animals Chicken Essentials have made transitions so much easier for you with their Baby Chick Care Kit! I've alwasy used their products and I trust they are giving my girls the healthy building blocks their little systems need. Our chicks have all grown up to be healthy, beautiful birds after using these kits and our continued use of their products after.

Quick story time:

Baby Nugget with the products that literally saved her life.

I’d like to tell you a short story about one of my silkies. I bought Nugget from our local farm supply store. Along with her other silkie sisters, she came to our home and went straight into the brooder. We quickly noticed that Nugget wasn’t quite right. She kept looking straight up and off to the side. I found her alone and not doing well. Nugget was battling Wry Neck. I started giving Nugget the Chick E-lixir and First Peep by hand. After about 24 hours, she was running around the brooder along with everyone else! It was so much fun to see these products bring life to our little Nugget. If I had any questions about the success of these products, they were gone that day. It was incredible to watch. Nugget continues to thrive in the coop and is such a silly chicken to watch!

So, whether you’re new to backyard chickens or maybe you’re on your 5th round of adding to your flock like me (ha, yikes!), these products will be a valuable staple in the care of your backyard flock. Grab a Baby Chick Care Kit at your local farm supply store or HERE on Amazon. You won’t regret it!

Until next time,
