It’s summertime and for the most part our flock loves to free range as much as possible during the day. They love to scavenge the yard and find interesting treats as they scratch around and explore. However, there are days that I don’t let the girls’ free range due to weather, our dogs, or simply because I don’t want them pooping everywhere (amen!?) or our Minnesota winters.
If this is the case on any given day, I like to treat the girls with scratch, fruit and veggies or other yummy snacks to keep them from getting bored. While throwing scratch down on the ground, giving them a large cabbage head or making them fruit and vegetable garland are all a little less time consuming, the chickens go wild over this chicken treat!
You can shape them how you want, poke holes to hang before you bake, or just simply set them around the run if you have a larger flock. This will allow for less fighting!
And believe it or not, these treat toys will make your house smell amazing, and you may find yourself wishing you could have a taste…until you remember you put mealworms in them! Hahaha!
These are a hit with our flock and I’m certain they will be with yours too! I like to add Happy Tract to mine. Happy Tract is a daily treat that promotes digestive health. It contains oregano, cinnamon and thyme essential oils, prebiotics, multi-grains, cracked corn and sunflower seeds. It’s a flock favorite for sure!
Treats for Chickens Recipe:
3 C. Happy Tract
1 C. Oats
1 C. Sunflower seeds
1 C. Mealworms
½ C. Ground flaxseeds
1 C. Applesauce
½ C. Molasses
4 Eggs (with the shells for added calcium!)
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together very well. Place parchment paper into your baking pan. Scrape your treat mixture into the pan and press into the pan well. This is where you can shape and poke holes! Make sure you do this before you bake because the treats harden while they’re in the oven. Bake for 30 minutes. Allow them to cool. Remove from pan and use some twine or baking string to string your treats to hang.
My chickens usually get this a couple times a year (whenever I feel like baking mealworms in my oven! haha!) It’s a no fail recipe that’s a hit every time! And, with the Happy Tract, they’re getting extra goodness added into their diet and I know I’m giving them healthy treats that will keep them occupied.
Until next time,
