Because everyone in the backyard deserves a cool treat, feathers included!

Hot summer days call for cool treats. With a few simple ingredients, you can make dye-free snow cones for the kids and a chicken-friendly shaved ice treat for your flock!

First, Why Dye-Free?

Artificial food dyes are everywhere in store-bought snow cone syrups. Those neon-red, electric-blue, radioactive-green bottles are basically the firework show of the food coloring world. They’re impressive, but not exactly something you want your kids (or your chickens!) consuming in large quantities.

The good news? Nature makes some stunning colors on its own. We’re talking deep berry purples, sunny strawberry pinks and golden lemon yellows, all from real fruit. Plus, they taste infinitely better than anything that comes in a plastic squeeze bottle.

Part One: Dye-Free Snow Cones for the Kids

What You'll Need

  • A snow cone machine or blender (crushed ice works great too!)

  • Fresh or frozen fruit

  • A small saucepan

  • Water and a little honey or maple syrup to sweeten

  • Snow cone cups or regular bowls

DIY Fruit Syrups (3 Easy Flavors)

  1. Strawberry Pink  Simmer 1 cup of fresh or frozen strawberries with ½ cup water and 2 tablespoons of honey over medium heat for about 10 minutes. Mash the berries, then strain through a fine mesh strainer. Let cool completely before pouring over ice. The result is a gorgeous blush-pink syrup that tastes like actual strawberries. Imagine that!

  2. Blueberry Lavender Purple  Use the same method. 1 cup of blueberries, ½ cup water, 2 tablespoons of honey. Add a tiny pinch of dried culinary lavender if you’re feeling fancy (totally optional, but the kids will think you’re a genius). Strain and cool. This one turns a beautiful deep violet.

  3. Lemon Sunshine Yellow  Combine ½ cup fresh lemon juice, ½ cup water and 3 tablespoons of honey. Warm gently until the honey dissolves. No need to cook this one long. Bright, tart and the prettiest pale yellow!

Snow Cone Assembly

  1. Crush or shave your ice and pile it into cups.

  2. Drizzle your cooled syrup generously over the top.

  3. Hand them to your kids and enjoy approximately 45 seconds of peace before someone spills theirs ha!

Pro tip: Make a double batch of syrup and store it in mason jars in the fridge for up to a week. Snow cone happy hour can happen any afternoon.

Part Two: Shaved Ice for Your Chickens

Yes, really. And yes, they will love it! Chickens can struggle in summer heat, and keeping them cool is genuinely important for their health and egg production. Cold treats are a fantastic way to help them beat the heat, and watching a flock of chickens go absolutely bonkers over a bowl of icy fruit slush is, frankly, some of the best backyard entertainment available.

Chicken-Safe Shaved Ice (No Syrup Needed!)

Chickens don’t need sweeteners, the natural sugars in fruit are plenty. Here’s how to make their frozen treat:

Simple Frozen Fruit Bowl

  • Crush or shave a few cups of ice

  • Scatter on top: blueberries, sliced strawberries, diced watermelon, cucumber chunks or whatever fresh fruit you have on hand

  • Add in some Flock Fixer! A super blend of essentials oils, electrolytes and pre-probiotics for extra flock hydration

  • Place in a shallow dish or pan in the run

That’s it! Your chickens will peck through the ice to get to the fruit, which keeps them busy, cool and hydrated all at once.

The Best Part of All This?

You’ll be standing in the backyard, handing your kids their strawberry snow cones, watching your chickens lose their minds over a frozen blueberry snow cone, and thinking, this is exactly the summer I wanted.

No artificial dyes. No fuss. Just real fruit, happy kids, and a flock that thinks you are, without question, the best chicken keeper who has ever lived.

Now go make some shaved ice. Everyone’s waiting!
